We get many calls from homeowners who are looking to protect the outside areas of their homes with security cameras. The most common question that we field from homeowners, other than the wired vs. wireless cameras question (answered here), is whether we have covert (hidden) cameras for the outside of a home.
We can understand the aesthetics of a home, and not wanting to put up an extremely large camera, but there are reasons to make a camera visible – without being obtrusive in the outside areas of your home.
When we are talking about our homes, preventing a crime from occurring should be our first priority. Visible security cameras can help prevent something from occurring in the first place, because the criminal will be able to see that they are being watched. Criminals usually think twice about stealing or vandalizing if they notice cameras watching the area.
Our outdoor bullet style cameras are a great selection for outdoor home security cameras, because they are relatively small, but are clearly visible at night. When the IR Bulbs turn on at night, the front of the camera is illuminated with a faint red glow, showing any would-be criminal that they are being monitored, even if it is dark outside. With this type of camera, it can easily be mounted up underneath the downspout of the gutter in the eaves of your house, where it is not an eyesore, but will certainly help to deter criminals from their endeavors on your property.
Covert cameras can be useful Inside the home though, if your main purpose for the inside cameras is to monitor the babysitter or nanny, watch home health care workers or monitor the children while they are at home, but in the outdoor areas of our homes, the cameras should be visible without being an eyesore.
