For years, almost every customer who calls us in regards to a camera system for their business always asks about the ability to capture a license plate. While this has always been possible with standard NTSC resolution DVR Systems (up to 720×480), in order to capture a license plate reliably at that resolution, the camera must be zoomed in specifically on the width of a single vehicle. Below we have attached a picture from our showroom showing an Analog security camera with a 12mm Lens – positioned 25 feet from the license plate that is shown. The camera used is our CD-9255-12 Hi-Res Infrared Night Vision camera with 12mm fixed zoom lens. This camera has a Sony 1/3″ 420 TVL CCD Image sensor and is being recorded onto a PC using our Alnet Professional DVR Card in 720×480 resolution.
However, this is where the benefits of MegaPixel IP cameras really come into play. For instance, a 5.0 MegaPixel IP security camera like our AV5100DN camera, provide a much higher resolution of recording (2592×1944 compared to the 720×480 resolution of Analog Cameras). Therefore, these AV5100DN Cameras from Arecont Vision can provide better overall coverage, and recognize license plates while still covering a wider area.

These MegaPixel IP Security cameras will allow you to record from a wide viewing area, and still capture license plates. These cameras plug in to a standard PoE switch with a single CAT-5 network cable, and send video over the network to your NVR (Network Video Recorder) for recording. Not only are you able to use less cameras to record, but these cameras can also reduce the cost of wiring by using inexpensive CAT-5 network cables.
